As for unaccompanied minors (UAMs) – mainly teenagers aged 16-17, with no accompanying parental figures – these deserve special attention. In the three-year period between 2014-2016, the UAMs cared by the Territorial Social Services in the region increased from 893 to 1,081, predominantly male (over 90%) and Albanian (43%), followed by those of African origin (Gambia, Nigeria, Egypt). From 2015, two “HUBs – reception facilities” have been set up in the region, as well as a series of SPRAR transitional accommodation projects, while there are numerous communities already set up in the past. In order to improve protection standards for minors, a support system has been set up for regional structures, and monitoring is being carried out to improve age assessment procedures, helping to establish and expand a single national information system (SIM).
